Gambling should be a paid-for form of entertainment, like a cinema ticket — never a way to make money or solve money worries. We’ve used Betmica’s safer gambling settings ourselves while testing the site. This page explains what each tool does, how to set it up, and where to turn if you or someone close to you is struggling.
Good to know
If you need to talk to someone now, the National Gambling Helpline run by GamCare is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133.
Warning signs to look out for
Problems rarely start overnight. These are the signs support organisations most often describe:
- Spending more money or time than you planned, more than once
- Chasing losses — depositing again to win back what you’ve lost
- Borrowing money, selling things or missing bills to fund gambling
- Hiding how much you gamble from family or friends
- Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you’re not gambling
- Gambling to escape stress, boredom or other problems
- Lying about wins and losses, or feeling guilty afterwards
If one or two of these sound familiar, that’s a good moment to use the tools below — before things get harder.
Betmica’s safer gambling tools
Betmica, as a UK-facing operator, must offer a standard set of controls. Here’s what we found in the account settings:
| Tool | What it does | Options | Can you undo it early? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit limits | Caps how much you can deposit | Daily, weekly, monthly | Decreases are instant; increases wait 24 hours |
| Loss limits | Caps net losses over a period | Daily, weekly, monthly | Increases are not instant |
| Session reminders | Pop-up after a set time playing | Interval you choose | Yes |
| Reality checks | Shows time played and net result | Interval you choose | Yes |
| Time-out | Locks the account for a short break | 24 hours to 6 weeks | No — runs until the end date |
| Self-exclusion | Closes the account for a long period | 6 months to 5 years | No — cannot be lifted early |
| GAMSTOP | Blocks you from all UK-licensed gambling sites | 6 months, 1 year or 5 years | No — cannot be lifted early |
UK rules also limit online slot stakes to £5 per spin (£2 for players aged 18–24), set a minimum spin time of 2.5 seconds, and ban autoplay and turbo modes. Those protections apply automatically.

How to set up your limits
- Log in to Betmica and open My Account.
- Go to Responsible Gambling (sometimes labelled Safer Gambling).
- Choose Deposit Limits and enter a daily, weekly and/or monthly figure in GBP. Save.
- Open Loss Limits and set an amount you’d be comfortable losing over the same periods.
- Under Reality Checks, pick a reminder interval — every 30 or 60 minutes works well for most people.
- Check your email for confirmation. A lowered limit applies straight away.
Betmica also asks you to set a deposit limit at registration. If you skipped it, the steps above add one at any time.
Taking a time-out
A time-out is a short break of 24 hours up to 6 weeks. Choose Time-Out in the Responsible Gambling section, pick the length and confirm with your password. You won’t be able to log in, deposit or play until it ends, and any marketing stops.
Self-exclusion and GAMSTOP
Self-exclusion closes your Betmica account for 6 months to 5 years. It cannot be lifted early, even if you ask support. Withdraw any balance before you start it, or contact support to have it returned.
To block every UK-licensed gambling site at once, register free with GAMSTOP at gamstop.co.uk. Betmica checks GAMSTOP, so a matching registration will block your account here too — and that block can’t be reversed before it ends either. Read more on our account blocked page.
Blocking software and bank blocks
Self-exclusion works best alongside barriers on your devices and money:
- GamBan — blocking software that stops gambling sites and apps loading on your phones, tablets and computers.
- Bank gambling blocks — most UK banks and card providers let you block gambling transactions in their app. Some build in a delay before the block can be removed.
- Marketing opt-outs — switch off emails and texts in your Betmica account settings so offers don’t tempt you back.
Am I gambling too much? A quick self-assessment
This short questionnaire is based on the kind of questions support services use. Answer honestly about the last 12 months; it takes about two minutes.
Am I gambling too much? A 9-question self-check
Think about the last 12 months. Answers are scored in your browser only — nothing is sent or stored.
1. Do you bet more than you can really afford to lose?
2. Do you need to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same feeling of excitement?
3. When you gamble, do you go back another day to try to win back the money you lost?
4. Have you borrowed money or sold anything to get money to gamble?
5. Have you felt that you might have a problem with gambling?
6. Has gambling caused you any health problems, including stress or anxiety?
7. Have people criticised your betting or told you that you had a gambling problem, whether or not you thought it was true?
8. Has your gambling caused any financial problems for you or your household?
9. Have you felt guilty about the way you gamble or what happens when you gamble?

Advice for family and friends
Gambling harm affects the people around a gambler too. If you’re worried about someone:
- Pick a calm moment. Talk when neither of you is stressed, and avoid doing it straight after a loss.
- Describe, don’t accuse. “I’ve noticed you seem worried about money” goes further than “you’ve got a problem”.
- Don’t lend money to cover gambling debts. It usually prolongs the problem.
- Protect your own finances. Separate joint accounts if you need to.
- Get support for yourself. GamCare and BeGambleAware offer help to affected others, not just gamblers.
You can’t make someone stop, but you can point them to the tools on this page.
